From Beano to Bingo
Did you know that the very first Bingo session was played in Italy around the 16th century? It started from the Italian lottery named Gioco del Lotto d'Italia. The game then spread to France, Great Britain, and other parts of Europe.
However, the modern bingo card was developed by Edwin S. Lowe, an American salesman that was traveling through Georgia around 1929. On his trip, he noticed a booth crowded with people that were playing a game with boards and beans.
Lowe learned that the game was called Beano, and was derived from a lotto game played in Europe.
Our salesman became interested in this game and once he returned home, he experimented with multiple numerical combinations to make it more engaging and complex.
The legends has it that Lowe invited some of his friends to test the improved game and when one of them won, the guest mistakenly shouted out Bingo instead of the initial name, Beano.
From here, Lowe started manufacturing bingo boards with the help of a mathematician that came up with more than 6,000 different numeric combinations. The new Bingo game grew in popularity very quickly and by the late 1930s, multiple companies were producing bingo sets.
